Runescape is an extremely popular 3D online role playing game serving more than one million subscribers. The game serves people all over the world, but their core audience is in english-speaking countries. The game itself allows people to sign up (for free) and control a character. They then meet other characters in this virtual world and can choose to develop their character"s skills and power during their "quests". Admittedly, this whole game world is foreign to me, but then I never understood Dungeons & Dragons either. Regardless, the site is highly sophisticated, free, and obviously of great entertainment and value to over a million subscribers (apparently in the 14-24 age range). They even have 120 employees who support the users 24/7. For $5 a month, a user can upgrade the features in his game playing.

RuneScape is a massively multiplayer on-line role-playing game (MMORPG), it is also the name of a virtual world with monsters to kill, quests to complete and treasure to win. RuneScape is more than just a game: it is an evolving world of remarkable depth and flexibility. Players control a character and train them to improve and become more powerful, or simply to become more skilled. A player may even decide not to improve at all, and simply trade goods in one of RuneScape"s many markets. What a player does in RuneScape is entirely their decision: nothing is predetermined.

This site was obviously made by those that relish game playing in the virtual world, as they have created a loyal fan base and a high number of site visits. They also constantly upgrade and improve their game to ensure they retain their members.
