getdemocracy.com - Like Tivo for the Internet

If you’re in search of newer means of viewing TV on the internet, Democracy is just what the doctor ordered. This latest webTV platform is a media player which also connects to the major video hosting services. So you can download and save videos from YouTube and Google along with over 1,000 free channels available with the built-in Channel Guide. Subscribe to video RSS feeds or podcasts. Download BitTorrent files and watch them all within the same app. Democracy is compatible with most video types so you can watch old files from your collection. You can also organize your media collection, make playlists, and manage your offline and online videos with one fell swoop. Democracy is entirely free and open source. Downloads are available for PC’s, Mac’s, and Linux.

    In their own words

There"s an opportunity to build a new, open mass medium of online television. We"re developing the Democracy internet TV platform so that watching internet video channels will be as easy as watching TV and broadcasting a channel will be open to everyone. Unlike traditional TV, everyone will have a voice.

Why it might be a killer

Democracy makes managing both your offline and online video content simple; you don’t have to go out of your way to organize and compile playlists. Also their new folder watching feature, which keeps tabs on newly added videos and imports them directly into Democracy makes organization virtually hands-free. There’s resume playback, handy for when you need to break for snacks etc. Most importantly, Democracy is a lot easier than having to scour the web and hand select all the videos you want to watch.

    Some questions

How is Democracy going to get a foothold in this all too crowded video space? Will user support be enough to keep it going? Will Democracy add more keyboard controls used with other players? What about iPod support?
