Freedocumentaries.org - The Truth is Free

    freedocumentaries

Freedocumentaries.org is a database full of (take a guess) free documentaries. You can find the one you're looking for based on a variety of categories by theme (animal abuse, environmental, health, war, etc.), by region, or just by scanning the entire list. They also have a separate list of documentaries in Spanish. With each film you can choose whether to watch in a small, medium, or large screen size, and occasionally they'll offer the film in another language, such as Dutch. Every documentary has its own page, and on the page there's a description as to what the movie is about, their comments on it, and any related links such as ways to get involved or check out more information on the topic covered in the film. You can sign up to be notified when they post new films, and if you've enjoyed their free service, you are encouraged to donate so that they can continue offering their site for free. Now there's finally a spot on the web to find the documentaries that had been missing from many video aggregating sites.

    In their own words

"At freedocumentaries.org we believe strongly that in order to have a true democracy, there has to be a free flow of easily available information. Unfortunately, many important perspectives, opinions and facts do not make it to our televisions or cinemas (you can watch movies in our media category if you want to know why).

For this reason we decided to start freedocumentaries.org, a site where anyone with an internet connection can watch a movie and educate themselves or simply explore another perspective whenever they want.

Providing films free not only allows anyone to watch a film but it also allows curious people who think they may disagree with a filmmaker to watch a film without worrying that they are giving money to someone who's views they don't agree with.

Everyone that watches a film at freedocumentaries.org should learn something, whether it be a new perspective on a topic or simply understanding how others think. We can say that the vast majority of people that watch our films are glad they do so.

Freedocumentaires.org also allows independent filmmakers to have their message heard to markets which they wouldn't reach easily."

Why it might be a killer

They make it very easy to view the documentaries and very easy to find content you'll be interested in based on the various breakdowns of categories. The descriptions are well done and you can tell they've put effort into each of their links. Hopefully enough people will donate to keep the service free, such as with PBS. It's nice to see a video site not covered in ads.

    Some questions

A majority of their documentaries seem to be with a political angle. Could they add some more that are based on other themes with a lighter quality such as Rize, Dogtown and Z-Boys, Mad Hot Ballroom, etc? How often are new films added? Could they make the site more social by allowing viewers to add their own comments and links for the documentaries on the site? With a site that seems to present only documentaries with pretty strong sides to each story, maybe a forum would be a good idea for people to discuss the topics they viewed and learned something about from the films.
