In their own words
Crackle, a Sony Pictures Entertainment Company formerly known as Grouper, is a streaming entertainment network dedicated to the discovery and development of pioneering video creators across a diverse range of genres. Crackle delivers programmed and customized video streams to a global audience via a multi-platform syndication network that includes Sony devices, IPTV, leading social networks and one-click viral web distribution. Crackle launches the most innovative creators with on-going collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment and other leading media partners.
Why it might be a killer
Before Grouper was Crackle, it used to be a hub for scrutiny given that a good amount of their content contained sexually explicit material. Now that Crackle has re-launched under a new name and under a seemingly stricter moral policy, they’ve got an idea that has rarely been used in the world of video hosting and sharing. Their platform is more or less aimed at discovering new talent and giving them the opportunity to work with their partners at Sony. This is much different from the myriad of Youtubes, who will let anyone who knows how to press record to be featured on their website or host their own channel.
Some questions
Will they be able to shake off their previously questionable image? Will exclusivity hurt them or create buzz?
