Recordcup.com - Digg for Deciding World Records

    recordcup

Who has been the best soccer player in the world? Ronaldo, Beckham, Pele, Maradona? Recordcup aims to let the public decide the answer to this question, and more like it. The site is like the People's Choice of Guinness World Record's, where anyone can ask and answer any question, while asking others for their opinion. The videos are the medium by which people choose their answers (ie., video of Beckham and Maradona, etc.). Whoever gets the most votes, wins. It's that simple. Let the people decide, the creator is saying. The creator also seems to be a bit disenchanted with the formality, expense and bureaucratic protocol at the Guinness World Records. The video, not a Guiness judge, is the evidence. The home page is fun, as each time you refresh it a new contest pops up on the screen with the attending videos showing the different contestants. The site may not find the cure to cancer, but it has a bit more depth and intrigue than MySpace and sites of those ilk.

    In their own words

"Recordcup is the site of world record contests. Everyone can upload & vote to decide who's the world champ. Essentially, Recordcup is your ultimate record destination on the web. We are a record competition community that allows users to watch, upload, search and share records, allowing you to know who/what is world no1. Recordcup is a completely free service. Record hosting, viewing, and membership all have no cost. So feel free to watch, upload and share as many records as you like, as often as you want. In fact, we encourage it!"

Why it might be a killer

Like I have said before, competition is good for pushing the envelopes of creativity and innovation. This site puts Guiness World Record on notice that the people are creating their own world records using their own rules and guidelines. I have no doubt that some day the videos posted here will be used by Guiness and cited by others as authoritative proof of some preposterous claim.

    Some questions

Do people really care about world records? The site is fun and a good way to waste time, but is there a way to transform this idea into something constructive (like to make this site the host of a contest for innovative technology, or ways to save the environment, or ways to improve democracy, etc)? How is this site going to make a profit?
