Leximo.org – The World’s Dictionary

Leximo.orgWhen asked to define what a dictionary was, someone (I think it was a British author, but I don’t want to make a mistake) remarked that a dictionary is nothing but a universe arranged in alphabetical order. That is quite accurate, but there is a definition I like best – the one that defines it as a big poem about everything.

Both definitions are excellent, actually. One vantage point does not annul the other, and they complement each other pretty well.

I was reminded of all this when I chanced upon this site. Its tagline goes “The World’s Dictionary”, and it is an open project that lets people from all over the word define words. These definitions are then ranked by other members of the online community.

They say that you can’t beat local knowledge, and the approach of the site seems to reinforce that stance. If we are given the choice of asking a native speaker the meaning of a word, and asking a scholar the selfsame question, chances are many of us will go for the native speaker. A site like this one lets us do just that instantly, and also add our own insight and perceptions for the benefit of others.
