Movietally is a service for indexing and tagging films which works a bit like a simplified Social Network. Using it is very simple and profiting: create your account and upload the movies you’ve seen or would like to, and then other users will recommend on them positively or negatively. An alternative way to use this site is to just search any movie or keyword/tag for what you are looking for, and then you’ll receive a list of movies or tags that match that search criteria; each movie has a small summary and screenshot or release poster, plus basic info (cast, director, year of release, etc), a tag cloud and a link to the site’s official or wikipedia page if available. Next to it you also get information on the people who have seen it or recommended it, and you can check out what other stuff that person has been watching, and decide to get in touch to share your experience.

Tagging movies, provided that the tagging is done in a reasonable way, is a convenient way to explore specific areas of interest, and since the site is kept by movie aficionados, the detail and insight provided in the reviews and summaries will probably interest other movie enthusiasts as well, and even those who study cinema on a more academic level.

Unfortunately there are not much foreign titles featured, and the stuff that the site actually caters for is basically independent blockbusters (like Trainspotting, American Beauty, Memento), so unless they want to end up tagging Meg Ryan’s films on a regular basis, the people at Movietally.com will have to consider opening room for independent and/or foreign releasers. Will they?
