Metro Transit is the transportation system for the Twin Cities. It offers an integrated network of buses and trains, as well as different solutions for people who carpool, vanpool, walk or bike. Metro Transit is currently working to add Bus Rapid Transit and the Northstar Commuter Rail to the list of options that citizens now have in terms of transportation. Metro Transit is amongst the largest transit systems in the United States, providing roughly 95 % of the 73 million bus trips taken every year in the Minneapolis and St. Paul metro area. During work days customers board Metro Transit buses and trains an average of 240,000 times. Metro Transit operates the Hiawatha light-rail line, 118 bus routes — 63 are local-service routes and 46 are express routes and 9 contract service routes, using a fleet of 821 buses. The majority of the company's fleet are comprised of standard 40-foot buses while 140 are articulated or “accordion” buses. To accommodate the needs of all the passengers that use this transportation system, all Metro Transit buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts or ramps as well as racks for bicycles. All of the Metro Transit trains feature step-free boarding, bicycle racks, and luggage storage areas.
