The Ironman World Triathlon Championship is an annual race that has become synonymous with the height of athletic endurance. This event is held each fall in the city of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The race is made up of three events; a 2.4 mile ocean swim, a 112 mile bike ride across the Hawaiian lava desert, and a 26.2 mile marathon run along the coast of the Big Island. Qualifying events for the Ironman take place around the globe every year. This grueling event began 30 years ago when a group of Navy Seals wanted to see who the fittest athlete was amongst them.
