HullNumber.com is a sort of simplified social network for the US military navy; the idea is that users register and associate themselves to a ship, provide some photos and information of the boat and/or themselves, and also about their mates, to help reunite the crews of ships and also to create a sort of online memorial and gathering place for those who have served the navy in the past, dating back to World War II and to the present time. Sites for ships support text and photos, from which a gallery is created; each page can post links to other sites dealing with the ship, and announce upcoming reunions as well. HullNumber.com allows users to contact each other though not directly; here’s how it works: an ex crewmember creates a page for a ship and enters information about him/herself, the ship and all the people he remembers; other people come into the site to confirm they are those ‘remembered mates’ and edit their personal data, submit information about other mates, and get in touch with the person who included them in the network. E-mails are kept confidential, as communications are handled by the site itself.
