Globusz.com - Brave New Publisher Of Free eBooks

The publishing industry is slowly staring to freak out at trying to understand what the impact of web 2.0 and new technologies have and are going to have on what we read and how. To date, there’s been lots of talk and scarce solutions, and the fact remains that authors are producing valuable works that most of the time don’t get published and thus don’t get read at all. Globusz.com is providing a solution to that, or at least exploring the options: this site is a publishing company that charges authors a small fee for making their manuscripts into eBooks, and allows readers to download the books for free. Their catalogue is very ample and diverse in terms of topic and interest, and has a community of readers and volunteers who go with it, who do a precious job in reading all this material, discussing it and working to improve it in collaboration with the authors, and all that relying on a completely volunteer system: as long as you believe in what you do, what you like and what you want to read, and are committed to work for that, you’ll be welcome in this site, which in turn makes it a great opportunity not only for authors, but for editors, graphic designers and reviewers to kick start their career. Since there are so many titles available from the site, I was hoping to find some form of recommendation other than the book club (which is altogether not too active), maybe as a tag cloud or the good-ol’ popular downloads section, or maybe as a staff picks area can be of help. Globusz publishes books in English, Spanish, Italian, German, Romanian and Hungarian as well.

There's got to be a catch to all this, I mean, what's in it for me?

I'm one of the book club reviewers. I'm a retired journalist, and in this, an unpaid volunteer. Motivation? I'm enjoying myself, and who knows? I may just be the one who spots and nurtures the next great literary talent. Even if not it's not "literature", I like the idea of helping a writer tell a worthwhile yarn, and then helping other people find it. Next up, I expect to review an ebook about a guy's experiences on Australia's last wild frontier, fishing and crocodile hunting in the tropic north in the early 1960s. It also gives me a change of pace from my personal blog, http://grumpyoldjourno.blogspot.com/
