The Animal League, or North Shore Animal League started in 1944 in Port Washington, NY as a small shelter in a garage. Slowly, and taking the best care of abandoned and injured animals, the league grew bigger and bigger and with the help of Alex Lewyt, a retired investor who loved animals, they managed to get funds to keep the shelter up. Nowadays, the shelter receives orphan animals from not only nearby shelters and organizations but also from shelters from different states, near ones and distant ones alike. Moreover, they don’t just work as a shelter, as they’ve founded the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center which takes care of over 10,000 animals, administers over 15,000 vaccinations and performs over 11,000 spaying or neutering procedures. They provide other services such as mobile animal adoption, adoption counseling, training and foster care.
