AirForceMemorial.org - Honoring US Air Force

After fifteen years of pursuing the development of a Memorial to honor the men and women that serve the United State Air Force, one was finally erected. The United States Air Force Memorial honors the service of the personnel of the US Air Force and its predecessors. The monument is located in Arlington, Virginia, near the Pentagon on the grounds of Fort Myer. James Ingo Freed, an American architect is responsible for the design of the Memorial. He is most known for his design of the Holocaust memorial Museum, making him the ideal person to design this Memorial. The Memorial is an array of stainless steel arcs and evokes the image of “contrails of the Air Force Thunderbirds as they peel back in a precision bomb burst maneuver”. At the entrance there are four bronze statues of the Memorial’s Honor Guard. The base of the Memorial is framed by two inscription walls bearing the names of the recipients of the Medal of Honor, and inspirational quotes regarding core values.
