    Smplr.com - Streamlining Your Searches

    smplr

Tired of increasingly frilly search engines? Make Smplr your start page. This streamlined search engine utilizes only a single search bar for your queries. Automatically redirecting all searches to Google unless otherwise specified, Smplr expedites any search by allowing you to enter in “triggers” – extremely short search terms which produce results via a default website – followed by a colon. For instance, if you enter “news:”, you will be taken to Google news. Similarly, “film:” brings you to imdb.com. Additionally, users may directly access a url by keying in “go:” followed by the name of the site (e.g. “go: mac.com”). The site also provides a widget for the desktop, though it appears to only currently be functioning for the Mac OSX platform.

    In their own words

"Smplr is a simple start page. Smplr uses "triggers" to fire off search queries or to launch a website. By default, your queries will go to google. Triggers are a small bit of text (usually 1 to 3 characters) that, when appended with a colon, preface your search queries. To search for smplr at yahoo, you only need to type "y: smplr" and press enter”.

Why it might be a killer

Smplr is a great point of departure for internet use, making it fast and easy to access any webpage or to conduct a search. The triggers add functionality and speed to the search engine and default to a variety of other larger search engines. Moreover, Smplr eliminates the need for multiple toolbar links.

    Some questions

Is this really faster than toolbar links? When will the site expand the triggers it supports? Is it really expediting searches if it simple defaults back to Google, Yahoo, etc?
