Picollator.com - An Image Based Search Engine

    picollator

Picollator is an image based search engine. Yeah, you’ve got Google Images, so this probably seems to be old hat; however, the difference with Picollator is that it’s actually designed to understand digital pictures as we do in actual life. Picollator scans the net collecting digital images and matches visual objects within the images using pattern recog technology. Basically, it works without words—it’s not text based. Currently, it only indexes faces, so to find a face, you can start by uploading a sample photo. From there, Picollator will pull up photos and pages containing faces similar to the one in your sample photo. You can test it out using one of the celeb photos on the homepage.

    In their own words

“Picollator Online is the sole image search and indexing engine which understands digital images like people do it in real life. Picollator Online scans the Internet, collects digital pictures and makes the index, matching visual objects in the images by pattern recognition. Picollator Online finds what user wants without any words.

Picollator is able to help you find photos of people more easily than any existing text-based search system. You can simply upload a photo with people to launch the search process.”

Why it might be a killer

Picollator’s image based search engine is quite different from your regular Googles and Yahoos. They do say that pictures are worth a thousand words, after all, so it does make sense to find pictures based on pictures, as words often aren’t sufficient.

    Some questions

First of all, the fact that you have to upload a photo to find a photo, may deter users. If you already had a photo, why would you need to search for one? And for those who want to find similar results, the output could be iffy. Will the engine be able to differentiate between faces, genders, etc? How pertinent are the results?
