    findlaw

FindLaw provides online legal information and solutions for the legal community, businesses and individuals. If you’re a legal professional, corporate counsel, law student, or just a consumer, you’ll probably find this site very useful. The set of legal resources include Web search engine geared specifically for legal research, cases and codes, legal news, an online career center with law firm salary charts, legal job listings, and community-oriented tools, such as e-mail newsletters, and message boards. The legal directory is a searchable database with more than one million lawyer and law firm listings. There’s also a legal market center consisting in a searchable directory of businesses that provide a broad range of products and services to the legal community. You’ll also have free access to nearly 8,000 forms from federal appellate, district and bankruptcy courts as well as state courts. Other interesting features include an online legal magazine, a Supreme Court center, focusing on the United States constitution and its impact on society, a small business center that includes essential information on starting, financing, managing and marketing a business, a searchable collection of legal agreements between today's hottest companies, in-depth legal marketing information, a legal dictionary and an online bookstore.

    In their own words

“FindLaw is the highest-trafficked legal Web site, providing the most comprehensive set of legal resources on the Internet for lawyers, businesses, students and individuals. FindLaw began in 1995 as a list of Internet resources compiled by engineer and attorney Timothy Stanley and attorney Stacy Stern for a workshop of the Northern California Law Librarians. The response to the material was so positive that the team decided to post it on the Web so that others could use it as well. In January 1996, FindLaw was launched, and it continues to grow in scope as well as in popularity. In January 2001, FindLaw became part of West Group, the foremost provider of e-information and solutions to the U.S. legal market. While FindLaw continues to operate as an independent division, this strategic alliance has enabled a rapid expansion of the number and variety of free offerings, as well as the creation of new, more powerful services.”

Why it might be a killer

FindLaw is definitely a good place online for getting free legal material. It provides such a wide range of subjects, with such depth and with such seemingly endless expansion, that the site has an entire page devoted to its features. With its strategic alliances with big name websites as CNN.com, FindLaw has transformed itself into a multi-service Web site serving a wide audience.

    Some questions

Finding a lawyer through this website seems very easy. However, when people need to hire a lawyer, not matter for what purpose, one of the most important things is having good references from him. Will people rely on online resources for taking this kind of decision or will they just stick to highly recommended people?
