Filext.com - The File Extension Source

    filext

Looking for the name of a program that uses a particular file extension? If so, this is the right place for you. FILExt is a database of file extensions and the various programs that use them. If you know the file extension you want to learn about simply enter it into the search box. If it's in any of the FILExt databases the data they have on that file extension will be shown on a results page. If it's not in any of the databases you will be given a link to a page with hints on how to do further research. But don't search on terms; just search file extensions. Other alternative would be to use the alphabetical listings. Select the list that represents the first letter of the extension, or select the number list if the extension starts with a number or the symbol list if it starts with a non-alphanumeric character. FILExt also has a Google Toolbar button you can add. Need some help? FILExt runs a discussion forum where you can register and then post questions. FILExt also allows you to learn about file extension related topics through its FAQ.

    In their own words

“If you did not come here directly or via a search then it's likely that you clicked on a file that Windows did not know how to open, you then picked the "search the Internet" option from the dialog and clicked on the search link on the Microsoft page that suggested you come here (or to our sister site cknow.com) to do the search. Please understand that you did not come here because we installed some software on your system. FILExt only exists on the Internet and we don't install software on your system. Basically, you got here to search for the name of a program that uses a particular file extension.”

Why it might be a killer

How many times you’ve clicked on a file that Windows didn’t know how to open? Everyone had probably faced that situation more than once. In order to solve that problem, FILExt provides users with a catalog of file extensions, the programs that use those extensions, and links to those programs.

    Some questions

Will they offer users customer support? Will they add the possibility to perform other type of searches? How up-to-date are FILExt databases?
