Finder is an application that allows site users to store, organize, and share geographical data. Through a search function and listed categories, such as Business and Labor and Science and Environment, users may hunt for various geographic datasets. In order to use the site, users must be invited. Once they have received an invitation, they then register a profile on the Finder site. After profiles have been registered, users may then save their searched datasets to those profiles, and share that information with other Finder users. Registered users may also upload their own geographic datasets to the site as well.
| In their own words | |||
“Finder is a browser-based application for finding, organizing and sharing GeoData in common formats. Designed to both host and store GeoData, Finder is bringing together the world's geographic data. Use Finder to organize the geographic data that matters to you.”
| Why it might be a killer | |||
The concept behind Finder is solid and useful for specific users, particularly professionals. However, there is limited information available on the site as of now. To succeed, Finder must ensure that the database is full of available information.
| Some questions | |||
How can users be incentivized to upload their own datasets to grow the site? What other methods can be explored to enhance the information content of the site? Does the invitation-based user system affect the amount of information posted?

| Thanks for the review on Finder!. A couple of quick answers to the questions. One is we've only gotten the first bit of data migrated over Finder!. There will be lots more coming on line over the next couple of weeks. Over 4,500 datasets and 70,000 layers will be available.As for incentive Finder provides several useful services that we'll be expanding. Currently there is the ability to convert files between formats and provide statistical analysis for free. Also with "My Library" you can easily organize your geodata and other geodata you've copied from Finder!. That data is then accessible from anywhere and can be shared with others. By contributing geodata you have an easy way to share that with both GIS professionals, GeoWeb users, and spreadsheet jockeys.In the future we'll have a robust map making application that you can visualize multiple datasets on interactively, and an Atlas to add stories and collaboration around your maps.Lastly the invite only is just short term while we stress test large group uploads and finish migrating data into the system. | ||
