    OpenMoko.com - Free Your Phone

    openmoko

OpenMoko, the linux-based open source mobile software developer recently launched the Neo FreeRunner, an open source mobile with wifi capability, GPS and email. Accompanying the mobile’s launch, comes the websites OpenMoko.org and OpenMoko.com, the latter of which is the official portal for the development of the OpenMoko platform. With OpenMoko, you can customize your phone how you want. OpenMoko.org offers a plethora of opportunities for both developers and end users. OpenMoko is divided into five parts. The OpenMoko Wiki acts as the OpenMoko library and centralizes all information and documentation on OpenMoko software. OpenMoko Bugzilla keeps tracks of software glitches and bugs as well as feature requests and wishlists. OpenMoko Planet, works as an RSS aggregator for developers so you can get the latest news on what’s going on at OpenMoko. OpenMoka Projects is a place where you can develop your own software with the support of peers. The final piece of the OpenMoko universe is the OpenMoko Listserver, which holds all the official public mailing lists of the project. Each piece provides you and your phone with endless possibilities.

    In their own words

Welcome to the official portal for development of the OpenMoko platform. Here, developers and end users alike, can learn about and contribute to building the platform designed to “Free Your Phone.”

Why it might be a killer

OpenMoko is appealing in many ways. It has a number of software possibilities and provides a way for users to make the phone they actually want to use. Those interested in a mobile not constrained by software limitations and contracts ought to consider what OpenMoko has to offer.

    Some questions

Will OpenMoko’s open source provide quality software? Will users want a phone that’s linux-based? How will OpenMoko find revenue?
