LightPole endeavors to illuminate your world, figuratively speaking. This mobile app lets you explore new hangouts, restaurants, shows, monuments and even local history. They call it mobile discovery—you’ll get real time geo-specific updates about places and events in your area. It’s basically a bit of mapping, search, and RSS combined. How it works: download LightPole to your mobile. When you want some info, say the nearest wifi spot, enter in your location and open a channel to Hotspotr which prospects for hotspots. Use MappyHour to find happy hour dives near you. Yelp’s also in there and you’ll also find Yahoo Local. You can add comments or notes and share info with a friend. Points of Interest can be saved in your favorites—called My Places. LightPole’s free to download.

In their own words
“Get the most out of wherever you are. LightPole brings the knowledge of place to your mobile phone. Get real-time, geo-specific content about restaurants, shows, local history, and much more. Make annotations, record Points of Interest, make your own recommendations, and alert friends. Tap into blogs and local news in real time. LightPole illuminates the here and now.”
Why it might be a killer
LightPole is a light weight app which rolls up a bunch of services into one easy and convenient package. It’s got a plain and clear interface and is pretty easy to use. Its partnering with Yelp and Yahoo will definitely attract users interested in the service.
Some questions
Are more partnerships in the works? Will they add a directions tool for those who aren’t too map savvy?
