Available as a desktop application or as a fully mobile one for the iPhone, Foreflight offers pilots an array of tools to help them better plan their flights and keep informed. This robust solution provides continuously updated weather information, searching of routes and distances between airports, aviation podcasts and news, airport and approach diagrams and easy flight plan filing. Pilots will especially like this last feature which allows them to file new flight plans in under ten seconds, view a complete history of previously filed flight plans and use these as templates for new ones. Pricing ranges from a completely free edition which is limited to just the flight planning to about $9 a month for all the bells and whistles.

In their own words
“ForeFlight iPhone Edition is a mobile companion for pilots that packs rich information, search, and imagery into an elegantly designed package. We believe it’s the most beautiful, powerful application for pilots ever built for the iPhone.”
Why it might be a killer
The mobile edition of Foreflight has been designed exclusively for the iPhone platform and they’ve done a great job of building a solution that takes advantage of the iPhone’s full range of features. Considering the cheap price tag and the robust range of functionality, look for this to become a popular tool in every pilots pocket.
Some questions
Will they be developing mobile solutions for Windows based PDA’s and Blackberries? While the design and interface would have to be altered, why limit themselves to one platform?
