In their own words
“We've got a simple mission–make the independent in independent music mean something. Technology has always disrupted the status quo. It has created new industries and changed existing ones. And music is one industry which is ripe for changing. Technology has offered musicians an opportunity to connect directly to their fans and a whole spectrum of new audiences”
Why it might be a killer
SessionSound doesn’t charge a sales commission but rather offers a flat fee for CD sales, which may be a preferable system for some. Though SessionSound does receive a cut of the profit, the material remains fully under the control of the artist which produced it. In terms of the site itself, SessionSound is offers well-constructed and aesthetically pleasing interface, along with a cool “sound lounge” to check out the newest music on the site.
Some questions
US $5 seems like a giant cut of the profit for a single CD sale, implying that the average price for a truly profitable CD sale for the artist must be pretty high. I wonder how many people out there would be willing to throw down such an amount of money on a product that’s becoming antiquated; is there a way that SessionSound can offer the entire CD in mp3 format for purchase and download?
