Buzz.com - The Top Blog Posts in One Website

Buzz.com is yet another service that promises to let you have a bird’s eye view of the internet’s hottest topics, only this time it focuses on blogs in the following categories: sci/tech, world and US news, business, sports, entertainment, health and celebrity gossip. When you visit the site, you’ll see a highlights section where all the topics that are generating the largest buzz on the blogosphere are summarized, discussed and presented. If you take a look at the categories I was mentioning before, you’ll get access to coverage in a similar format: a brief extract from the original piece of news or the article that started or triggered the wave of responses linking to the source, plus you also get a list of the most respected blogs that deal with the topic, whose coverage of the buzz you can preview in three-line or first paragraph length. The most interesting thing about the way Buzz.com presents the blogs is that you have two subcategories: ‘Blogs that make a point’, and ‘Blogs that make you feel’, which I reckon is a good way to differentiate the blogs that present a more analytic approach from those who are more inclined to stir controversy and debate.

  In their own words

“Welcome to buzz.com, where we search the Web for you, collecting the most engaging blogs on some of the hottest topics that people are buzzing about. Use the Hot Topics to find the "buzz of the day". Or choose one of the other categories from the tabs across the top. We provide a news summary of each topic we’ve found. And then you can explore buzz.com’s selected blogger opinions on that topic under Point Made, or more personal thoughts under Point Felt”.

Why it might be a killer

A very interesting bit about this site is the buzzcasts, which is a flash-generated talking head like those you come across so frequently in the internet (and are so annoying), which reads out loud a part of the summary on the news. I reckon this is quite cool not only for people with visual impairments, but also to use as a super condensed news radio broadcast, which you can set to read out the stuff you are interested in while you are scanning over your email or performing some other task that requires you to be looking to it.

  Some questions

How many news aggregators are there? A gazillion? These people are going to need some powerful advertising scheme to grab a substantial market share. How are they planning to do it?
